The Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza: A Celebration of Heritage and Community
The Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza is an annual festival that transforms the seaside town of Llandudno, Wales, into a bustling Victorian fairground. Held every May Day Bank Holiday weekend, this vibrant event has become a cornerstone of the town’s cultural calendar, attracting visitors from near and far. Over the years, the Extravaganza has grown in both size and popularity, showcasing the best of Victorian entertainment, crafts, and community spirit.
Origins and Evolution
The Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza was founded in 1986 by Mayor Cllr Margaret Lyon, along with a small group of local councillors and heritage enthusiasts. The primary motivation behind the event was to boost the local tourism industry during a typically quiet period between Easter and the late May Bank Holiday. The founders aimed to create a lively, free-admission show that would draw visitors to the town and support local businesses.
The inaugural event featured a range of Victorian-themed activities and attractions, including street theatre, maypole dancing, carriage rides, and a grand Victorian ball. A highlight of the first Extravaganza was the arrival of “Queen Victoria,” portrayed by actress Margaret Lacey, who presided over the festivities from a hexagonal stage on Mostyn Street. The event also included vintage car and motorcycle rallies, judged by the Mayor, with prizes awarded for the best vehicles and costumes.
In its early years, the Extravaganza received substantial financial support from the local council, which helped to establish its reputation as a major event.
