How school inspections work in Wales

Schools in Wales are inspected by Estyn, the education and training inspectorate. Since 2022 Estyn reports no longer give overall grades like “Good” or “Excellent”. Instead they describe what the school does well, set out recommendations, and say whether the school needs follow-up. Most schools need none and simply draw up an action plan. Schools causing concern can be placed in “significant improvement” or “special measures” and monitored.

Estyn now also makes shorter interim visits between full inspections. Older reports (before 2022) still carry the old graded judgements.

Welsh-medium education

Every child in Wales learns Welsh, but in a Welsh-medium school most lessons are taught in Welsh. In Llandudno, Ysgol Morfa Rhianedd is the Welsh-medium primary and Ysgol y Creuddyn the Welsh-medium secondary. Children don’t need to come from a Welsh-speaking home. “Dual language” schools teach through both Welsh and English.

Applying for a school place

  1. Reception and secondary transfer applications usually open in the autumn of the year before your child starts.
  2. Apply through Conwy County Borough Council’s admissions service.
  3. Catholic and Church in Wales schools (Bendigaid William Davies, Bodafon and San Siôr) may also ask for a separate form sent to the school.
  4. Moving mid-year? Contact the admissions team about an in-year transfer.
